Why a blog?
I don't presume to have great nuggets of wisdom which must be shared with a watching world. However, it strikes me that those of us tasked with preaching and teaching the Bible go to great lengths in 'mining' the Scriptures each week - trying to understand and convey their riches to others. Most of these sermons are delivered and received just once (the 'Sunday Sermon') - and that is no waste since the word never returns void but fulfils its God-given purpose.
I've often wondered though, if these labours couldn't be multiplied out in other ways and for other uses. Should (or could) every sermon not also spark a Bible study, a podcast episode or a blog?
Well fear not Joe Rogan, I ain't coming for the podcast crown, but this blog is here to stress test the latter theory. At the start of each working week I aim to post a new blog - a concise summary of Sunday's preaching (with links to the text, the video, and the handout for the super keen) - welcome to the Monday Sermon!
I have three (obviously alliterated) reasons for this - for me, for members, and for Mondays.
- For me. It's good to digest down the sermon into a few paragraphs. I you can't say it simply you probably shouldn't say it at all. For the seriously short of time most blogs begin with the 'Monday Main Line'... the sermon in a sentence (or occasionally two...)
- For members. Hopefully it might prove helpful for some in our church family to catch up on teaching or recap what they heard.
- For Mondays. Speaking of which...
What's in a name?
That's a Shakespeare quote - did you know? I didn't, Google told me (are you feeling confident?)
It's the Monday Sermon because I'll post, well... each Monday but also because of the conviction that Bible teaching which only has a Sunday shelf life is no good. It needs to follow us into our week and speak into the realities of life. It's often been said that the Bible isn't dull (and pity the preacher who makes it seem so). Likewise the Bible isn't irrelevant - shame on the preacher who makes it sound that way.
What a plonker he is. I'll try and not be that plonker.
